High-level steps

This is general information and an indicative estimate, not legal advice, and not a guarantee of approval, a fixed number, or a fixed timeline. The regulatory analysis period is 180 days (Decreto 9.199/2017, art. 228, which regulates the Lei de Migração — extendable if further inquiry is needed). That is a deadline, not a measurement: no Brazilian authority publishes actual processing times or compliance rates for naturalisation, so anyone quoting you a typical number of months is guessing. Real timelines vary by your documents, the office, and your case. Your specific situation may differ — the requirements, evidence, and route are confirmed individually. Government, notary, registration, and sworn-translation costs are separate. Speak with our team about your case.

Marriage or a stable union with a Brazilian can reduce the qualifying residence period for ordinary naturalization to one year when the legal conditions are met. It does not grant automatic nationality, create a guaranteed one-year processing time, or belong to the separate category of special naturalization.

    What has to be proved?

MJSP requires continuous residence for an indefinite term, evidence supporting the reduction and the other applicable requirements, including Portuguese communication ability where required. Check the actual authorization, residence records and travel history. A wedding date or first tourist visit is not enough to establish the qualifying period.

    What if the relationship changes?

Separation, dissolution and the date of the decision can affect reliance on the spouse/partner ground. A Brazilian child may provide a separate basis for reduction. Do not assume either that divorce always eliminates every reduced route or that a past relationship permanently guarantees eligibility.

Is there a compulsory A2 examination?

The Migration Law does not prescribe a universal CEFR level. Celpe-Bras is one evidence route among the alternatives accepted by MJSP. Check the official document list before paying for a test or course.

    Preparing the file

Organize passport, CRNM and residence authorization, residence/travel history, civil-status evidence, relevant child records, criminal-record documents and accepted language evidence. Agree legalization and translation requirements before ordering foreign documents. Administrative processing is separate from the residence-eligibility period.
